Observations of the Fammatre Craft Boutique

On Saturday, March 1, 2008, I rented a table at the Fammatre Charter Elementary School Spring Craft Boutique in San Jose. As this was my first craft fair, I don’t really have anything to compare it to, but I’ve jotted down a few observations. Because the location was an elementary school, there were lots of kids, which made for a wonderful family atmosphere. There were approximately 25 vendors featuring a large variety of offerings including ceramics, homemade candy, jewelry, needle crafts, paintings, meat rubs, potted orchids, and more. My table featured my treasure candles, bath salts and soaps, flower pens, photography, and photo note cards. I tried to include a bit of everything, since I didn’t know the market. The proceeds from the table fees ($40 per table) and the concession food went to the school’s science camp scholarship fund so kids who can’t afford the tuition can still attend.

The school will be hosting another fair on the first Saturday in November, which should be more profitable, as the holidays will be nearing. The host also mentioned that more tables may be available, depending on demand. I've included a few photos of my table and the room setup. Here are some specifics, in case you are interested in selling or shopping at the November event:

Fammatre Elementary School
2800 New Jersey Ave.
San Jose, CA 95124
Attention: Laura Miles

Boutique hours are 10:00am – 3:00 p.m.; set up begins at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday. All booths must be set up by 10:00 a.m. and manned all day – no tear downs before 3:00 p.m. please! Tables (7’ by 2 ‘6”) and chairs are provided but vendors are responsible for their own table linens and displays as well as the collection of any applicable sales tax. There will be some refreshments and snacks sold by the 4th and 5th grade students with their parents help.

Thank you for the write-up. Last year (Oct-Dec) I attended both the Blossom Hill Elementary, Los Gatos, and the Noddin Elementary, San Jose, school craft fairs. They were some of the first shows I attended and I think the experience was good to break into the show market, but I didn't make a lot of profit and would not attend again.
