Friday Feature - Maggie S. Hurley

Happy Friday!

Who's up for some beautiful, remarkable, and utterly adorable illustrations?
Maggie S. Hurley has two shops full of precious prints. Her playful, whimsical shop, maggieshurley, showcases prints of lighthearted storytelling with charming characters. Over at her other shop, maggiehurley, you'll find beautifully intricate oil painting prints of wildlife formed by colorful, lively brushstrokes. Head on over to her sites - if only just to say "Hi" to Herbert!

Enjoy the interview!

1. To which Etsy Teams do you belong?

SF Etsy, East Bay Art Collective, art, Etsy Children’s Art Street Team, Etsy Talent Hunt, Etsy Ugly Cute, and SF - Something Completely Different

2. Please tell us about the items in your Etsy shop. What do you make? How did you learn your craft? What is involved in your creative process?

Put simply: illustrations, paintings, and the occasional plush. I have a few recurring characters: some whimsical little creatures that are mostly robot with a splash of something a little more delicate, some jaded women with an attachment to the science behind love, and my grumpy little owl called Herbert, and a bevy of bird portraits. I also do children’s portraits, and the occasional flower or piece of fruit. Armed with my grandmother’s artistic proclivities, a stack of Brian Froud books, and some watercolors, I taught myself to paint when I was a kid. I spent a year and a half at an art school in Southern California, which I adored, and have continued honing my skills ever since. My creative process starts with either an idea of what I’m going to make, research for some source material and careful planning before getting started OR, I just sit down with a pencil and my sketchpad and will something into existence. Sometimes I’m convinced that there are at least three different artists holed up in my head.
3. What inspires your creations?

The better question is what doesn’t? I seem to find animal life and nature in general to be pretty inspirational. I like to take long walks around my neighborhood where everyone’s yards have an abundance of flora and fauna. I take a bunch of mental and real photos and let everything marinate. Often times, my dream life seems to play a part in my creative process. Then, when I sit down to a blank canvas or piece of paper, the work seems to almost do itself.

4. How did you get involved with Etsy?

A friend of mine first turned me on to Etsy waaaay back in 2006. I signed up and listed a few items, but didn’t really have much success until Herbert the owl popped up. I got a lot of positive response to the prints I was creating, which inspired me to keep going with it. It’s been so interesting to see where my art manages to find a new home. One print was purchased by someone who lives in a castle in Wales!

5. What is your favorite item in your shop (currently for sale or previously sold)? Why is it your favorite?

I’m pretty smitten with a little bunny that I painted not that long ago. I’m really enjoying the softness of the colors and the overall sweetness. Another piece that basically painted itself. I kind of want to give the little critter a hug.

6. If you had a gift certificate to Etsy for any one item you wanted, what would you buy?

I am totally smitten with this gorgeous tree canopy bed: http://www.etsy.com/listing/18999276/under-the-apple-tree-canopy-bed-modern?ref=pr_faveitems I’m sure I’ll never be able to afford it, but my, isn’t it lovely?

7. What crafting skill(s) do you wish you had or hope to learn someday?

I’d like to turn my little robots into mobiles, which I think would best be done by laser cutting. There’s a fantastic place called TechShop in SF that teaches just that, amongst a bunch of other wonderful techniques with fancy equipment. I just need to get myself together and do it.

8. Where else can we find out more about you and/or your creations?

I have a blog that gets updated occasionally: http://hushmouse.blogspot.com
I’m a big user of Facebook and Instagram, and I tweet a fair bit about new work.

Gathering Inspiration: From Yourself!

Need Inspiration?! Dig a little into your past and find some wonderful nuggets of awesome!

In November I decided that I'd pull together a calendar for 2012. And I started sketching out ideas for every month.... school bus, rain, flowers, Santa Claus and so on... until I had an idea for every month. Then I spend a good couple of hours starting my project before my project became too much for me to handle. Who starts a project for January at the end of November?! Especially as a craftswoman. I just didn't have time to really find that extra inspiration and time to complete the task at hand.

So I got this idea...dig through my favorites from the previous year!
I mean... hellooooo...duh.
I already had all of the months gathered up and scanned, I just had to curate the project and add in the months.

Plus! The project was almost all digital so I was able to offer it for FREE to my followers. I got so many happy comments about my calendar because people also loved my favorites as much as I did. Gathering the inspiration AND the materials from my year before helped me also to keep the project really cost affective, time affective AND also matchy-matchy.

FREE CALENDAR DOWNLOAD: GO GET IT HERE

Here is Feb... just in case you want to download it to your desktop.

I want to encourage all of us to really think about the work we already do... how can we mold what we do into another project... take a piece of something, reuse it... push it into something new and exciting for yourself and see your inspiration come from within.

Since I posted my calendar online...I have had more than 130 views of the calendar, many people printed it AND I even sold 10 of them that I had professionally printed. I see a 2013 calendar in my future.

How To: Create Buzz with Snail Mail & Cross-Marketing

If you know a little bit about me beyond the walls of SFEtsy, you know that I'm a Graphic/Web Designer that creates e-marketing campaigns for a large retailer here in San Fran. From online promos, online newsletters, Facebook content, to tiny little Facebook promos... I help to create that promo that follows you around on the internet. And although I tooootally believe and love online marketing...there is something to be said about Snail Mail that...well...just pulls at the heart strings.
That tangible gift you lovingly sent via USPS...it will be kept, it won't go into the SPAM filter, and your customer will really smile when they receive it....maybe even hug it!

If we all know that a little extra somethin' somethin' in an Etsy purchasers package makes their review of your site that much sweeter... how else can we use snail mail to inspire our customers?

Here's a fun thing I did that might inspire you to send out samples or a fun giveaway.

A friend of mine had made some beautiful postcards...and knowing that they were Free...I snatched them up. There I was...with a stack of postcards and a bit of time on my hands. So I had an idea... what if...I sent out a Facebook Message to my friends/customers and said... "send me your address and I'll send you something personalized and fun!"...
the addresses came pouring in! Free Stuff?! Noooo...for me?! Really?! Oooooo Ahhhh...
Before I knew it I had 30 names and addresses! :)

I took the cards and made 2 minute illustrations on the back of them...addressed them and shipped them out! Soon, I had comments from my customers that they - "I love your work, can I get my drawing as a painting?" and ..."this postcard is great!" "who made that?!". And...there you go! Cross-marketing!
without even really trying...and only a few bucks... I created extra excitement around my work and also marketed a friend at the same time.

Here are some more of the silly illustrations I did:

I encourage all of us to work together and cross-market our work...creating buzz for not just ourselves but also our community of Etsy Members will strengthen the community and also get others excited about what you are doing with your own art.

What Cross-Marketing have you done...what ideas might you have that could work for other members?
