South Bay SF Etsy Meet Up at Empire Vintage

Last weekend, some of our South Bay members got together at Empire Vintage in Mountain View to meet with owner Tiffany about Pop-Up Shop possibilities. I was impressed by Tiffany's passion for supporting local makers and artists. It's even painted in bold on the front windows of her space!

At the meet up, Tiffany shared some of her tips for selling retail. She has had a retail shop for 9 years, and she's clearly savvy about the psychology and nitty gritty of selling. She encouraged those of us who are new to in-person sales to "fake it 'til you make it," and her positive attitude was contagious. Tiffany spoke at length with us about how opening her own shop was the realization of her dream, and she wants to help support other local indie folks with following their own dreams. Having a pop-up shop for a few days can be a first step on that path for many people. By the end of our meeting, we were talking excitedly about what sorts of events we might host in her cozy space right off the main street in Mountain View.

It was so great to meet some new folks and to reconnect with old friends. Tell Your Story!

Etsy About Pages

How do you talk about yourself and your creative life?  Here are some of the writing prompts and resources we are using to tell our story best on the Etsy About pages.

• When did you first start working with your present medium? How did that come about?
• Do you have professional training, a creative cohort, or other community links that relate to your work?
• Are your family and friends involved in your Etsy shop in any way?
• How does your Etsy shop and what you sell reflect your hopes for the future?
• What areas of the world inform your work?
• What do people who know you best say about you?
• Can you describe the process of creating your works, especially where you work and how it feels?
• Have you worked in other mediums in the past?
• What eras of time are inspiring to you? How is this reflected in your shop?
• How would you like your customer to feel when using/wearing your works?

I've been a fan of Twyla Tharp's book The Creative Habit and this blogger has reproduced a great checklist of reflective questions from her section on telling your own creative story.

Listings: Descriptions and Tags

Once you tell your own story, it becomes easier to insert snippets of that into the description of your individual items.  Don't forget to link back to your own About page within each listing!  You can bulk edit listings and tags using third party apps, like Betsi or EtsyonSale.

• Try brainstorming words that describe your shop (not individual products). Try to do one word for every letter of the alphabet.  Pick a few great words from this list and then add a descriptor (adjective) to create tags for your individual product.
• The Holiday Merchandising Report is up from Etsy.  See if their tags and themes fit any of your work, use the exact terms if so.
• Use the new Market Research Tool to check out price points that are selling and notice the tags under each price point.  See if those tags are relevant to your work, especially if your price point is higher than average, notice what tags signal a higher price.
• Remember you can use two word descriptions as tags, but make sure the two words are relevant to each other.  Think "pumpkin orange" over "green orange purple" to keep it cool with Etsy.
• Tag your own full name and/or shop name if you think that your customer might be searching for you this way.  If you hope for referrals from friends and family, make sure that those people can find you by name.  
• Use the search bar to start typing in your tags and see what Etsy auto-fills for you in the drop down menu.  These are the most popular versions of your tags, use them if they apply to your work and keep in mind this changes over time.
• Check out what's being promoted in the treasury tags and Browse areas of the site.  If the terms fit your work, go ahead and add them as tags.  For example, in Jewelry, we are seeing "Personalized Jewelry", "Dangle Earrings", "Organizers: Trees", etc.  
• Ask other sellers for advice on your work, it's always interesting to hear how others describe your work and learn from a first impression.

Business Catch Up

Now is the time to make sure your business is all set up and you are ready to sell online and in person!  Get your Business License, Seller's Permit, and Temporary location permit all up to date.  We also have credit card swiper devices from Square on hand so you don't miss any sales.

SF Etsy FabMo Field Trip

Last week, SF Etsy had a field trip to FabMo for a special, private selection event. 

Fabric, fun folks, and all sorts of other upcycled creative materials -- what could be better?

It's always a treasure hunt to dig through the sumptuous piles of designer fabrics. You never know what you'll find! Most are samples, many of them discontinued, that have been recycled from various venues in the SF Bay Area. Personally, I was on the hunt for cottons that I could make into re-usable snack bags for my kids' lunch boxes (yep, back to school time!) as well as luxurious textures and beautiful colors that I could fashion into bags or use for collage quilts. I left with a tote back jam packed with gorgeous finds!

In addition to all the great fabrics, they had wall papers, tiles, zippers, buttons, carpet squares.... it really is fabrics and MORE!

It was a perfect get-together for us crafty folks -- many thanks to FabMo for hosting us and to Rebecca of OodleBaDoodle for organizing this meet up!

Tips From The SF Etsy South Bay Meet Up

Last week, some of us South Bay SF Etsians got together at Specialty's cafe in Sunnyvale to talk about crafting and all things Etsy. It's always lots of fun to hang out with fellow creative folks! I was delighted to see so many familiar faces and to meet new friends. Our gathering was very casual: we each took a turn sharing something about ourselves and/or our shops, and the conversation included many helpful tips, some of which I'd like to share today.

It turned out that both myself and fellow team leader Géraldine had taken advantage of the shop critiques generously offered recently by Tina of Better off Wed. We talked at length about the vital importance of tagging appropriately -- as you probably know, now that Etsy's default search is most relevant, it is even more important than before to match your tags, titles, and keywords in your descriptions. Géraldine shared a really nifty way to think about keywords, including a diagram! (I love visual thinkers!)

When I asked if we could share it on the team blog, she was even kind enough to make a clearer copy for me to post. Thanks a bunch, Géraldine! (For legibility, I kept the file bigger than our blog format, so click on the pic for the full image.)

Talking about keywords led to talking about Etsy's Merchandising Desk -- did you know that you can increase your chances of showing up in a treasury by using relevant keywords that match the selections made by the Etsy Merchandising Desk? Each month,  Etsy announces themes, and you can check them out here. If you're looking for ideas about keywords and how to tag your items, you should check out the Merchandising Desk articles at the Etsy blog.

Part of the fun in every meet up is seeing what people are working on lately. It's like grown up show and tell!

We were especially impressed by the custom display box made by Kathryn of Splendid Colors. 

 

It had the sweetest little insert boxes to keep everything organized -- and a row of hanging holes for earrings! (All beautifully decorated and laser cut at TechShop San Jose.) After we oohed and aaahed, Kathryn said she's considering doing custom work for anybody who is looking to upgrade their organization or display booths. Nifty!

We discussed many other topics of interest, more than can be shared in a single post. But here are two more takeaway tips from the meeting:

• Have you heard about FotoFuze?  If you're taking pics on a white background but have greyed out results, you might want to check it out. This free app brightens up your photos in a few easy steps.
• Did you see the link that Heather so kindly posted about the Small Business Week workshops in San Francisco? There was some interest in carpooling from the South Bay, so let us know if you might want to be in on that.

We are working on setting up some evening/weekend South Bay gatherings over the summer, because we know that the daytime weekday meetings don't work for everyone. We will have our next South Bay meet up on May 24th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Look for details at the team Google group!

The SFEtsy Mission Meet-Up - "start before you're ready"

Over the last year or so, we have really ramped up our Meet-Ups and events within our team. Which is Faaaantastic because we get to swap ideas, talk together and get to know one another face-to-face.

Last Wednesday, I went to a Meet-Up organized by Debbie of Blue Hour Studio at Borderlands. This was probably one of the most inspiring meetings that I've ever attended with other members.

When we first arrived, we did a little business card swap...which was fun because we could see all the different business cards that each team member made to showcase and brand their small business.
Then we went around the table, held up our card and introduced ourselves and talk about "What inspires you, how did you get into what you are doing now?"... the most interesting answers came out of those ice breakers.

Here are some of my favorite inspirational quotes from members:

- "Start before you're ready" a quote from Robert Glenn that was mentioned by Terrie. Basically, push yourself to do something you're not comfortable with and the rest will follow. If you don't take a risk than you can't really push yourself forward.

- "The passion keeps me going." From Eko who admits that she started her craft later in life, but she puts her passion into her jewelry designs and is putting in a lot of hard work to understand how to make her business grow and change.

- "Turning 40." Which I think is a motivation for many of us. Stop talking about what you're passionate about...and start doing!

- "To take a photo of a mountain...you have to climb it" which was based off a blog entry called The Pursuit of Excellence that Lisa read.

At some point, Rebecca from OodleBaDoodle started talking about the new things she's been doing. One of which was custom shirts for men and the other is portraits of pets out of fabric. I chimed in because I think my cat Tuna is my biggest fan...and funnily enough she had MADE ME A PORTRAIT OF TUNA... I'm still more than a little bit excited about it.



After my excitement died down we talked a bit about Business Groups. Korie made a good point that if a Business Group was member created, than it could essentially be "the blind leading the blind". I encouraged her that if she wants to create a business group, she can bring in experts to meetings who can help the group talk about specific topics. Also, there is no harm in people learning the ins and outs of something together and learning from each person's mistakes. A Business Group is an opportunity to really create strong relationships with other members since you will be meeting on a more regular basis.

Savvy Entrepreneur: Meetups, Business Groups, and Workshops

This past Saturday the SF Etsy Leadership team met to talk about big, bold plans for the year ahead. You’ve already seen a few things come to life, the SF Etsy Twitter chat and our first all team gallery show. We are all so excited and fired up to help build this community and support all of you in any way we can.

To that end, one of the biggest topics of conversation was what our role was in helping to organize various levels of get togethers. Here’s what we came up with, however we are totally open to suggestions and requests if you have an idea for something you wish would happen.

Meetups

We imagine meetups to be the social, community building side of SF Etsy. Our fearless leader Rochelle is the woman behind last year’s Craft Swap and will be pulling strings to make similar future events happen. We’ve got something in the works for May, but I won’t spill the beans just yet. If you have any great ideas for how all of us can get together more regularly or want to help out with meetups be sure to let Rochelle know.

As leaders we will organize a few of these a year with the intention of bringing as much of the team together as we can to meet face to face and make friends. Since we also know that many of you live outside of San Francisco we are looking for volunteers in the North, South and East bay to help us make these social events happen in your area. If this is something you’d be interested in contact one of our team co-captains, Katy or Steph.

Business Groups

A while back I wrote an article on the benefits of business groups and it motivated a lot of you reach out to one another to make something happen. That was exactly the intention. Business groups are your thing to manage and organize in whatever way helps you the most. It might be the same small group of you that get together once a month to share successes and failures or it might be a larger rotating group that meets every other week to ask questions of each other about running an Etsy shop. These can be as big or small, structured or casual as you want them to be.

However as leaders we’re here to support you in any way that we can so let us know if you need ideas on how structure one of these groups, have a group that needs more members or are in search of a group in your area. I personally would love to have a list of all the business groups that form so that I can help new members find the support they need. If you have a group you'd like me to be aware of just send a quick note with how often you meet and in what area. You are also welcome to add these meetings to our team calendar on the blog by clicking on the "Add Event" link just below the calendar.

Workshops

Yes, we also plan to have a few business success workshops for you before the year is finished. These of course are about building skills and knowledge to run your business successfully, although there may be a pre or post social hour added on.

We’re still hammering out the details of when and where, but look for one on branding to happen sometime toward the end of June and then a pre-holiday bootcamp workshop sometime in October. If we get a good response to these we’ll definitely plan more for next year.

So that’s our big plan for providing events that educate and bring you all together. As I said if you see something missing or have an idea for another type of event let Katy, Steph or I know and we’ll see what we can do.

WE WANT YOU! SFEtsy Team Member Gallery Show

You know what is totally awesome?! Us.
Yes, that's right...our SFEtsy Team is amazing. We are a diverse group of inspiring and talented people who support each other in everything that we do.

Here's our chance to really show what we are all about...This May, we will be having our very first Gallery Show at a wonderful space, STUDIO Gallery in San Francisco. Unlike previous team shows, this is not a craft show - this is a show to showcase how amazing we are as artists. STUDIO Gallery is excited about the chance to display work from our local Etsy team of artists and craftsmen in a brick and mortar space!

WHEN WILL THE EVENT BE?:
The gallery show begins May 2, 2012 and runs through May 27, 2012, with an opening reception on Saturday, May 12th, 2-6 pm.

WHO WILL BE IN THE SHOW?:
This show is for SFEtsy Team Members only. We are interested in any 2D or 3D media—paintings, prints, ceramics, jewelry, glass, metal, furniture, mixed media, sculpture, bags, etc.—as long as the work meets the Etsy definition for handmade. (Supplies, vintage or imported items, and sized clothing won’t be considered.)

ABOUT THE SPACE:
STUDIO Gallery in San Francisco is looking for artists and craftspeople from the SF Etsy Group to participate in a juried show at the gallery. STUDIO Gallery shows work from local artists and craftspeople, and this is our 9th year. They have a rotating schedule of shows, ranging from large, themed group shows with 175+ artists to solo shows. (STUDIO Gallery actually already shows several artists from our Etsy group.)



WILL THE WORK BE SOLD?: Yes. The gallery will take the typical 50% commission on any pieces that sell during the show. The artist will get the other 50%. If your work is accepted into the show, the prices on your Etsy site for comparable work and the retail price for the piece in the gallery will need to be consistent. You will work directly with the gallery owners when you sell work, drop off work and pick up work. For those who have never sold in a gallery before, this is a great opportunity to learn a lot about the business behind selling your work in a gallery space.

WHAT IF I DON'T SELL MY 2D ART/PAINTINGS ON ETSY BUT I'M A MEMBER?: Well, that's easy... you can still apply. Your 2D art can be entered in a very similar way as items in your Etsy Shop. See how in the "to apply" section.

TO APPLY
If you have work that you think would be a good fit for the show, you can:

1. Email the owners of STUDIO GALLERY at Art@STUDIOGallerySF.com and send us a link to your Etsy store where we can view photos of your work. If there are specific pieces you’d like us to consider, let us know where to find them on your site.

2. If the pieces are not available on your Etsy site, you can email us at
Art@STUDIOGallerySF.com with 2-3 low-resolution (72dpi, 5" x 5" max) photos of your
work in jpeg format; total attachments should not exceed 500K. Include the medium,
size and retail price for the piece.

The gallery is doing all of the selecting for this show to ensure that the work in the show has a fantastic variety and is the right fit for their established customer base. If STUDIO gallery thinks your work is a fit they will contact you to set up an appointment to see your work in person; this will also give you a chance to see the gallery. We will be reviewing work for the SF Etsy Show through Friday, April 20th or until the show fills up.

South Bay Crafty Computer Meet Up at Tech Shop San Jose!

Yesterday, some of our SF Etsy members got together at TechShop San Jose for a South Bay version of Katy's Crafty Computer Meet Up!

We had a great time meeting other crafty, creative folks -- always an energizing experience! (And especially so for me because I'd been cooped up with sick kids for several days! Happily, my husband was able to work from home for the morning so that I could attend the first two hours of the meeting!) It turns out that TechShop members can sponsor a meeting for up to 15 people for 2 hours, for free, so we were able to get together from 10 am to 2 pm, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Kathryn of Splendid Colors and Ilana of The Golden Gear. (Kathryn is an SF Etsy member, and her friend Ilana has now applied for membership!)

We started off the meeting by logging in to the Tech Shop Wi Fi:

We did a little ice breaker introduction -- was really nice to be able to pull up people's shops and check them out as they introduced themselves! Here's Suhita sharing some of her sketches, showing them to Valerie.


We chatted about Etsy and the team, took a Tech Shop tour, and shared some tips for our shops. I've recently been playing around with the FotoFuze app, so we talked about that for a bit. (If you've been trying to take pics on a pure white background, but you've been frustrated with the results, this app is worth checking out! I'm definitely not savvy about all this stuff, yet even I could get good results most of the time.)

Tech Shop is full of creative goodness and amazing supplies, tools, machines -- and from what I hear, talented and helpful teachers to let you learn how to do it all. On the tour, we got to see their Bin Wall of supplies for members:

They have a woodworking shop, a metalshop, a 3D printer... all sorts of amazing things. Here's Kathryn next to the laser cutter that lets her make her gorgeous gears:

Savvy Entrepreneur: Craft Swap Recap

One of the essential ingredients for success in running your own small business is a support group. As you're probably well aware the SF Esty Street Team is a great resource for just that reason. We have over 400 members in the Bay Area will all levels of experience and all sorts of backgrounds. There is almost sure to be someone who's "been there, done that" when you find yourself with a problem to solve. But beyond just being a resource for knowledge, having a group of like minded entrepreneurs to turn to when you're feeling overwhelmed, frustrated or simply beat down is invaluable.

All of this is why I was so pleased to hear that three of our team members have taken it upon themselves to form a meetup committee with the mission of having more in-person events for all of us to really get to know each other and make some deeper connections.

Lisa of Tickle and Smash, Rochelle of Haute Mélange, and Géraldine of Géraldine Adams Illustrations are the trio behind the most recent and biggest of these events so far, The First Annual Craft Swap. Held at TechShop, the afternoon was filled with all sorts of crafty goodness.

There was a plentiful swap table filled with all sorts of treasures.

GoGo Craft was in the house to to help us all make a banner with plenty of tools and supplies at the ready.

And one generous crafter donated boxes, upon boxes of inspiring materials.  

This is just the beginning of many more events to come, from smaller monthly meetups at cafes and wine bars to bigger events with hands on demos and networking. So watch for updates on Facebook, Twitter and here on the blog.

Thanks for a Fabulous First Annual Craft Swap!

We came, we swapped, we networked -- we made banners! We had a great time at yesterday's First Annual SF Etsy Craft Swap and Networking Event!

Swapping some Crafty Goodness!

You'll be hearing more details about the event from our Savvy Entrepreneur this week, but I wanted to take a moment to personally thank the amazing SF Etsy Meet Up Committee for all their hard work putting together this event-- especially Lisa of Tickle and Smash, Rochelle of Haute Mélange, and Géraldine of Géraldine Adams Illustrations. A lot of planning and energy went into making the event a success, and we really appreciate it.

Big thanks as well to TechShop SF, S.C.R.A.P., and GoGo Craft for their help and support! And of course thanks to Etsy for the team grant that helped make it possible!

Lastly, on a personal note, I'd like to send out a big warm fuzzy gratitude hug to those of you who were behind the gift that I was given at the event. What a super surprise! It's been almost two years now since I stepped up as the team leader for SF Etsy, and it's been a lot of work, but I'm just thrilled by how much the team has grown and developed in that time. It means a lot to me that y'all would be so thoughtful as to get me something to mark my devotion to the team -- I will use my new car magnet with pride!
