Dispatches From the Unique SF Show

Today's guest post comes from Amy Zierath of Lilibet Design.

Sunday mornings at the Farmers Market at Fort Mason are always a delightful way to spend the morning, and this past Sunday was enhanced by the Unique San Francisco Fall Market that was held at the Festival Pavilion on Saturday and Sunday.  Quite a number of local merchants participated in the show as well those from LA, Portland, and Albuquerque.

I never cease to be amazed by the ingenuity and creativity of the merchandise featured at these shows, and products are featured that you never thought you needed but after seeing can’t imagine how you would live without.

These were some of my favorite things:

Whiskers on kittens.

Just kidding.

The black Breton striped long sleeve shirt with flamingo from BlastoffBaby was one of the first items to catch my eye at the market.  Founded in 2012, Emily Bennett has created a line of children’s clothing that is gender neutral, bright and cheerful and breaks down the stereotypes for color and pattern for traditional children’s apparel.  Girls can rock t-shirts with construction equipment, and boys can wear pink.

Based in Palm Springs, LeslieShockley of Tea with Iris, is a strong proponent of up cycling and creating products inspired from her own garden.  Some of the highlights from her boutique featured all organic onsies with cutouts sewn in from vintage textiles and picnic blankets.  She has a rather terrific collection of tea towels that she has transformed into stylish Picnic Blankets.  A single tea towel takes the center of the blanket and is framed with coordinating panel of vintage fabric.  They are rather sturdy and long lasting with a waterproof tarp so they are easy to clean.

Another item that caught my eye are the cocktail greeting cards from UnderwoodLetterpress, which is based in Los Angeles.  Cara Underwood, the proprietor, makes stamp collecting really cool and turns the most basic envelope into a work of art.  However, she had me at Manhattan and I adore her line of greeting cards that features cocktail recipes and a snippet of cocktail art.  Definitely a great gift item and the perfect accompaniment to a hostess gift or a surprise card for a friend.

As someone who has juggled many a bottles of wine, casserole dishes, and flowers on the San Francisco cable cars enroute to a potluck or dinner party over the years, I don’t know how I survived without the creations of Shujan Bertrand, the San Francisco genius behind åplat.  Founded in 2014, Shujan has created a collection of sturdy and rather attractive carriers for baguettes, casseroles, baked dishes, flowers, etc. that are designed to withstand the urban commute whether it’s on foot, bicycle, taxi, or public transit.

L-R: Lovely ceramic hanging basket from Natacha NayCeramic jewels from Natacha Nay; Ceramic collection from San Francisco designer, Scott JenningsLumbar Lovelies from Portland's Scout & Whistle

Overall, the attendance was low for this show.  Perhaps it was the sunny hot weather that prolonged summer or that people weren’t familiar with the shops because most were from outside the Bay Area.  However, it drives home to me that there is a very real connection for success in these shows  with the relationship that local shops  have with the community, and we are very lucky to live in a community that supports and thrives on the entrepreneurial spirit.

Thanks for joining us, Amy! We appreciate your report from the craft show front-lines.

Captain's Log: Meet SFEtsy Community Supporters - Interview with Popupsters

Hello Teammies!

It's 2015, can you believe it? 2014 was a BIG year for our team. This year, we have a team goal to help you reach your business goals and help you take your business to the next level. One of the ways we are doing this is by talking to handmade supporters and leaders in our community and interviewing them for this blog. Several of our SFEtsy team leaders will be writing here too so you will get to see many facets of the handmade and maker community.

As a team, we were out in the community more than ever - all over the Bay Area! One of our big events was the 2nd Annual Indie Holiday Emporium. Along with Popupsters, we hosted nearly 200 local artisans (and over 40,000 shoppers!) at the historic Pier 35 in San Francisco.

When we were planning the Emporium, we searched for an event partner that really gets the handmade community and the spirit of small, artisan businesses and makers. Aaron Lander from Popupsters fit the bill and we are honored to have him as part of our SFEtsy community.

Recently, I sat down with Aaron and we talked about his role in the artisan community and a little bit more about Popupsters. I know you will enjoy getting to know Aaron and Popupsters and it will inspire you to connect with him online and see how Popupsters can help you take your business to the next level :)

I know you will enjoy this interview!
Rebecca Saylor
SFEtsy Co-Captain

1. Can you tell us a little about yourself as a human in the world?
I'm Aaron Lander, CEO of PopUpsters www.popupsters.com - you can find me online @popupsters & @aaronnizzie.

I was born, raised and educated in the great State of Iowa before coming to the Bay Area in 2011 where I've worked in the local food and agricultural industry (Marin Sun Farms, Fatted Calf, AgLocal) before starting PopUpsters.

2. How did you first get involved in with Makers and the Handmade Community?

I don't know if I can pinpoint a specific instance when I got involved with the maker community but I do know that I've respected the community since I was a child when I would help my aunt with her crafts.

3. What do you find most exciting about working with makers, entrepreneurs, and artisans?

I find the passion and creativity that makers, entrepreneurs, artisans and anyone with a talent, skill or craft to be very exciting. Whether I'm working with one maker or hundreds, there's an energy that's contagious. Listening to people's stories, the intricacy of their product and their vision for their business keeps me moving forward.

4. What do you find most challenging about working with makers, entrepreneurs, and artisans?

I think the most challenging thing for me is more about my personality than the makers themselves. I am a passionate person that has a sincere desire for everyone to succeed so I tend to take it personally when a maker doesn't have their expected outcome at an event. I've even been known to hit the streets myself when a show is slow to bring in shoppers.

5. Tell me about a special maker/artisian you’ve met while working on your business?

I think all the makers are special but one of the first people I met & continuously pops up in my mind, is Paul from Paulcity Goods

Paul Jansen is a prime example of the types of makers we are trying to help out. He is an extremely passionate and talented leathersmith, making his products from grassfed hides. Paul is constantly explaining the differences in grassfed vs conventional leather and then shows you through a microscope - this type of hands on experience is something that has left a lasting impression.

6.  How did you learn about SFEtsy?

I was lucky enough to stumble upon SFEtsy in a twitter feed. (Author note: Shout out to our social media Guru - Lisa Spinella for connecting our community)

7. What is one of your primary goals for Popupsters in 2015?

Our biggest goal is to host more events with groups like SFEtsy so your members have more opportunities to PopUp! The next is making it easier for you to host events on our website.

8. What’s the one online tool you’ve discovered that can help makers propel their business?

Besides PopUpsters, I think Instagram is an extremely valuable tool for bringing visibility to your product. Combine that with your existing sales channels and you can really increase your business.

For instance, having a PopUp? Take pictures of your products before, let people know when and where to find you and offer a discount for people that mention the post. Some people might not see the post until after the PopUp so make sure to include the link to your Etsy store in the post.

9. Do you have any words of wisdom to help makers sell more in person at popup events?

One of the things I can't stress enough is don't hide from your customers!

I see too many vendors sit behind a table while texting. If people are coming to a PopUp event it's because they want an intimate experience, which means they want to talk to you and learn about what makes your product special. Your story is why people buy from you so get it in front of your potential customers. Oh and make sure to promote your events - the more people promoting your event, the better.

Thank you Aaron! Next up we interview Sharon - Co-Founder of The Academy of Handmade

Tuestorial: Business Card Tin

Craft show season is here! Are you ready? If not, don't fret! I have a quick and easy business card holder to add a little pop to you display! The best part? It will take no time at all!

Materials Needed:

  • Altoids tin
  • White mailing labels
  • Trim (use materials from your handmade items or something that represents your shop's style)
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Step 1:

Time to give this Altoids tin a new life! Start by covering the exterior with mailing labels or you can glue decorative paper on the outside. Anything that will cover it's past life!

Step 2:

Print a label with what you would like your customers to see. I selected "Please take one! Online shopping & custom orders". You can keep it simple or make a statement. I left room to decorate with my material of choice. You can also hand write this.

Step 3:

Decorate! Of course, I choose glitter. I used scraps of material I make my zipper pouches from in a pattern that matches my shop banner. Color, sparkle, and sass.

Step 4:

Viola! A handy display that will show-off your business cards and it doubles as storage! Now, back to crafting...

2014 SFEtsy Indie Holiday Emporium Applications are Now Open

It's that time of year! We are preparing for our annual SFEtsy Indie Holiday Emporium!

The Indie Holiday is a unique art and craft market featuring the artists from our SFEtsy team.  Our team has been hosting a holiday market since 2006! This year's Emporium is going to be bigger and better than ever!!

This year we have space to showcase 200+ vendors and we will be partnering with Popusters, a local startup, and some other corporate sponsors (to be officially announced soon!) that will help us make this show a success for the entire team :)

Although, we absolutely LOVED working with All Good Pizza, we wanted to grow to include as many team members as possible. The Emporium will be held this year at Pier 35 (the old cruise terminal) along the Embarcadero in San Francisco on November 29th and 30th from 11am - 5pm each day.

If you are new to the team or haven't participated before, here are some answers to frequently asked questions:

WHAT IS THE INDIE HOLIDAY EMPORIUM?

The Indie Holiday Emporium is an annual market showcasing the SFEtsy team members and other artisan crafters and makers. It's a place for our team and friends to show off their work, offer DIY crafting stations and promote buying local, handmade items. Here are some photos from our 2013 show:

LOCATION AND DATES

The 2014 Indie Holiday Emporium will be held this year at the old cruise terminal Pier 35 along the Embarcadero in San Francisco. This is an INDOOR Space, not outdoor like last year. The Pier is a beautiful location with plenty of parking nearby and is easily accessible via public transportation. After looking at almost every large venue in the city, Pier 35 felt like the best fit for our team and we are super excited to be able to host our event there.

The Emporium will be held on Saturday, November 29th and Sunday, November 30th from 11am - 5pm each day.

HOW TO BECOME A VENDOR
Click here to access the online application for the 2014 show. We will be accepting 2014 applications beginning today through October 6, 2014.  Vendor acceptance notices will be sent on or before October 10, 2014.

We do have a very large team and a limited number of spaces, so apply early! There will be a jury process simply because we don't want an abundance of vendors in one category. SFEtsy team members will have priority for acceptance to the show.

WHAT IS A POPUSTER?
SFEtsy is VERY excited to be teaming up with PopUpsters this year to manage our vending program.   Becoming part of the PopUpsters community is beneficial to you as a vendor in so many ways and will allow you access to other bay area popup events.

When you apply to vend for this event, you will be asked to register an account with PopUpsters as well as craft a brief Vendor Profile.  We encourage you to take your time with this profile as PopUpsters often offers exclusive vending events for registered vendors - some of them are even PAID opportunities with very high profile organizations.

PopUpsters is a marketplace connecting vendors, artisans and makers of all kinds to unique and affordable spaces to PopUp, start and grow their businesses. Learn more at their website here.

COSTS OF THE EVENT
The SFEtsy leadership team has been working really hard behind the scenes to find an affordable and amazing space to hold our team show. The application fee and the booth fees will cover the cost of producing the show, pay for the venue and insurance and help us to run the events and programs for our team members throughout 2015.

All applicants to the Indie Holiday Emporium will pay a non-refundable $20 application fee. This fee will be credited towards the cost of your booth upon acceptance to the show. The application fees will cover some of the upfront costs of doing the show, such as flyers, insurance, advertising and marketing.

Each 10x10 booth is $250. There will be a limited number of half booth spaces available for $150.

From now until October 1, 2014, there will be early bird pricing of $200 per 10x10 space and $125 per 10x5 space (the half booths are very limited).

We are REALLY excited for this show and we look forward to seeing you and your wonderful goodies at Pier 35 in November!

APPLY TODAY!

If you have questions about this show, please contact our team Co-Captain, Rebecca Saylor of OodleBaDoodle.

Pacific International Quilt Festival (P.I.Q.F.)

A few weekends ago, I made the great trip up North (S.F. to Santa Clara) to attend the Pacific International Quilt Festival or P.I.Q.F. This event attracts quilt shops from all over and also hosts a collection of over 800 quilts. If you are a quilter looking to advance your skills, the big attraction is the variety of workshops and lectures offered by vendors such as Bernina.

Amazing quilt entries. Showing detail, skill and time dedicated to making quilts a piece of art!
This festival isn’t just for quilters. If you are a sewer or interested in textile arts, walking the large convention center will engage you in new tools, award-winning quilts and talking with fellow show goers who are excited to share their finds or latest projects.
So many tools and trims to make your projects better! FYI, a hemostat is my favorite sewing tool.
I discovered new fabric, tools, beads, buttons, rick rack, patterns, machines and even creative ways to setup your workspace.

Many of the shop vendors are local so it’s easy to discover fabric shops in your backyard. Everyone is friendly and excited to share what their store is all about. Almost every store offers classes too (check out Bay Area quilt shops Cotton Patch, New Pieces and Sew Bee It Quilting).

First time seeing mustache fabric! Now added to my collection.
Since there are hundreds of vendor booths, the creative displays offer endless inspiration to use at your next craft show
Creative ways to display fabric, gifts and completed projects.

Hi fabric tree! Hi fancy bowls filled with lovely trims!

Kitty and Elvis approve
If you went this year, we would love to hear your feedback on the show! Next year's P.I.Q.F. will be held in the same location, Santa Clara Convention Center, on October 17-20, 2013. Mark your calendars!

#SFEtsy October 30th - Holiday Craft Shows

This week's Etsy bootcamp topic is How to Rock it at a Holiday Show.

We'll be covering this topic as well, looking at where to find out about shows and how to make a good application. We'll also share our tips for making a good booth setup and displaying items to their best advantage.

What you wear and how you behave are just as important to a successful show so we'll be chatting about that, too. Finally we'll talk about how to build a longer lasting connection with the customers you meet at a show.

If you like to use tweetchat.com to follow our chats this is the link tweetchat.com/room/sfetsy
