May Meet & Make Recap: Lavender Sachets At SJMQT with Rebecca Saylor

We had a great time last night at the May Meet & Make -- SF Etsy's co-captain Rebecca Saylor of OodleBaDoodle taught us how to make sweet-smelling lavender sachets!
Rebecca helps a young maker at the sewing machine.
Rebecca had chosen a variety of lovely fabrics for us to use, in a variety of beautiful colors and textures. Many thanks to FabMo for donating the upcycled fabrics!

As usual, we had a great group of SF Etsy volunteers to help support the workshop. Many thanks to Sandy and Liz for taking time out of their busy schedules to join in the fun!

Trying out the craft so we can teach it! From left to right: Rebecca of OodleBaDoodle Sandy, and yours truly, Jen of Mama's Magic Studio. Not pictured (because she was behind the camera!) Liz of Ionyka. Joanne from the museum joined us, too!

And a big thank you to the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles for hosting another fun Meet & Make workshop!
Christine, executive director of SJMQT, takes a break from crafting for a little social media.
We love helping out with these workshops! SF Etsy will be taking a bit of a break from hosting for June and July, but we will be back in August with another great crafting activity. See you then!

Captains' Log: in the Works

Even Howard here with our second Captains' Log post. (You can read Rebecca's here.) I'd like to share our upcoming events and team visions, built with the help of our Leaders and members. We have so much to look forward to in the coming months.  The main thing I want to share is that all our members are welcome to participate in the team in your own best way. One of the best ways to get more involved in the benefits of SF Etsy membership is to attend an event or host a small one yourself. As the leadership team, we try to offer what we hear is needed and wanted, and one of our driving principles is peer to peer discovery and sharing of knowledge, skills, and joy.

So, please do attend and participate where you can and when your own idea sparks, let us know how we can help you make it happen! You can contact myself or Rebecca, or any of the leaders if you already see a close fit with their committees.

We've begun using the team calendar more. You can always check there for events and share events you think others would find of interest via the submission form.

Welcome to Rebecca Saylor, Our New Co-Captain!

Rebecca Saylor has been our Leader for Community Involvement and is stepping up to Co-Captain! Please join me in welcoming her to this role.  Our Co-Captains are paired up for overlapping 2 year terms so we can look forward to lots of fun with Rebecca and her shop OodleBaDoodle.

Many of us already know Rebecca from her recent success hosting the Bayview SF Etsy event: The Indie Holiday Emporium. She also is the creative mind behind the fantastic partnership with Rickshaw Bagworks. Whether teaching the latest Meet and Make or mentoring individual sellers, Rebecca freely shares her experience and enthusiasm for all things self-made. I had some fun interviewing her and hope you enjoy reading her answers and getting to know her better!

Meet Rebecca Saylor ~ SF Etsy Co-Captain

Rebecca Saylor and her famous Owl
Come say Hi on Facebook, Twitter, Etsy, Instagram, Pinterest, Flikr

How did you become part of SF Etsy?
I moved to San Francisco in February of 2010 and not long after, I attended a panel discussion at the old Museum of Craft and Folk Art which included founding  team captain Jen Johnson. I had been a member of Etsy (both selling things and buying things) for a few years and it was an inspiration to see a local team of so many like-minded people and I wanted to get to know everyone!

What has SF Etsy helped you with in your business life?
The big help has been just giving me direction and a group of friends in a new city. Because I came from a business background, I started my business with a business plan but I had no idea what I wanted to sell. Maybe that seems odd and it's totally backwards, but that's how I did it!  Like many makers,I found it difficult to limit myself to making just one item and I tried a bunch of different ideas before developing the decorative pillow concept. After I joined the team, I went to a small meet up at Katy Atchinson's apartment and it was with the
encouragement of Katy, Eko Wright and Talia Jewell that I decided to develop the hipster owls into a viable product. Meeting other team members gives you the chance to flesh out ideas and grow your business in a way you might not have imagined. Being part of a local Etsy team has allowed my business to thrive offline and online.

What partnerships, collaborations, or community connections are you looking forward to fostering?
Before opening my Oodlebadoodle shop, I had a prosperous 15 year career in Human Resources and technical recruiting. Being part of the team has given me a chance to put those skills to use to develop ongoing relationships with local businesses to provide opportunities for our members. Over the last couple of years, we've created partnerships with local businesses like Rickshaw Bagworks, FabMo, All Good Pizza and Ruth's Table - our plan is to expand on those realtionships and develop new ones that can give all of our members an
opportunity to grow their own businesses.

How do you get inspiration for your evolving product line?
Well, the creative process is a bit messy and sometimes I I find it difficult to process all my ideas. My inspiration comes from my love of fashion and the environment or sometimes an event in my life that sparks an idea. Oodlebadoodle started with "hipster owls" and the inspiration behind those owls, was actually the fashion I saw on the streets of San Francisco. I really admire the attention to detail that the men of this city take in how they present themselves and so the owls are a way for me to express my appreciation for men's fashion and my love of owls and other animals. Once I started putting myself out there with the owls, I began getting requests from my customers for other animals and I then selected ideas that I thought I could execute with my OodleBaDoodle spin.
OodleBaDoodle by Rebecca Saylor
Late last year, I had this idea that I wanted to somehow express how much I love the city of San Francisco. I've been know to say "I want to give this city a hug" so that's why I decided to make huggable pieces of this city, so I can hug it anytime I want!  That concept sparked an idea to designed and made a huggable Victorian house,
Golden Gate Bridge and Cable Car. I'm happy to know other people share my love of the city and want to hug it too! I'm expanding that product line to include a huggable Transamerica Building, Sutro Tower and huggable Oakland Cranes. If you want to hug something else in San Francisco, let me know :)
I started my career at a machine building company, just out of college. That company used to manufacture type sets for printing presses (think old school newspapers all made by hand) As you can imagine, they don't make those typesets anymore, but while working there, I fell in love with letters and type and the whole process of
making it. In particular, I really love the ampersand symbol. That simple symbol alone says so much, doesn't it? I look at it and I see love, togetherness, community, and joining of forces. So I'm working on a series of huggable ampersands based on some early type sets that were never made into fonts. Those will be available in the coming weeks.
I like to think that my pieces tell a story and that keeps me motivated to continue to create.

Do you have other volunteer jobs?
I love to volunteeer! I feel very fortunate to be able to give my time to different community programs. Currently, I volunteer as a helper for the Etsy Meet & Make programs at the Museum of Craft & Design and I love to volunteer with FabMo with pick ups here in San Francisco or other projects they have going on in the city. I also have been mentoring a young man coming out of the foster care system who is learning to sew. Volunteering fills my spirit and I couldn't thrive without it.

What have been some of your favorite team events?
Geez, there are so many events and I love all of them! There are a few that stand out, like our design contest with Rickshaw bagworks. I've been such a fan of the Etsy Meet and Make programs, as a teacher, volunteer or just an attendee, they are so much fun! Participating in the South Bay Meet and Make led to several personal and business connections that I am forever grateful for. I'm happy to have a friendship with Rosella from Ross Labs that came from that meet up.
All the events we've had at Ruth's Table. I met another dear friend, Paola from Knits by Paola at the Pricing Event, my co-captain, Even Howard presented. I learned a great deal that night about shipping, pricing and marketing my pieces. The two events that Stephanie Bolton from Since Sass and I put together with Ruth's Table were a blast too!  We did a FabMo selection event and a craft swap. We hope to repeat both of those this year.
One of my all time favorite small meet ups was held at Adra Valentine's house. We had a "crafty computer day" and spent time working on listings for our Etsy shops and eating delicious food. That was truly an inspirational day for me.
Rebecca, Adra, Eko, Katy, Even, and Talia meeting for "Crafty Computer Night"
Of course, I was blown away by the participation and excitement around our team Holiday show at All Good Pizza in the Bayview district. It was an honor to be part of such a great event for the team.
Recently, some of the team leaders, including the amazing Lisa Spinella, have been casually getting together
on Fridays for a little inspirational field trip somewhere in the city. We will be formally opening those field trips up to all of you on the team and I am really looking forward to meeting more of our team members.

You've brought some new leadership talent with you; can you let us know who and how you are looking forward to working with them?
I feel honored and proud of all of our members and it's really a pleasure when I get to know people more personally. In the past year, I've particularly enjoyed getting to know the very talented Betsey Reiche from B-Spired and Chelsea Farley from CuppaFog. We are so lucky to have them on our team and they both have joined the leadership team in 2014.
Betsey will be taking on my former position as Community Leader; she
has already been making connections and putting together some great
opportunities for all of us in the coming weeks. She's a very
inspiring person and her bubbly, inviting personality lends itself to
being a leader on our team. Chelsea will be bringing her savvy
bookkeeper skills to the leadership team as our Treasurer. It's
awesome that we actually need her to manage our funds. The leadership
team is so excited to be able to bring a series of exciting coaching
and business development programs that we will be rolling out in the
coming weeks to our SF Etsy team members!

{We have a few more new great leaders coming on board and will be featuring all of them in upcoming blog posts!}

Trees with Liz Storey! Recap of the December South Bay Etsy Meet & Make

On Friday, SF Etsy's own Liz Storey of ionyka and threads by ionyka led the final South Bay Etsy Meet & Make of 2013.
Liz takes a quick break from setting up to show off her sample ornament.
Liz put together a perfect holiday-themed craft for the evening: little felt tree ornaments! Such a sweet little elf-hat cone shape, with adorable stitching and decorations.
Felt, paper, buttons, and thread -- just too cute!

It's been fun to see several folks become "regulars" at these meet ups, and they were pleased to finish out the year with this fun-filled event, hosted as always by our friends at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles. Liz's tree ornaments were definitely a hit! She posted about the event at her own blog, including many great pictures of the samples made by participants. Here's mine!

As always, these workshops couldn't happen without the volunteer support of the SF Etsy community. Big thanks to all the volunteers who have come out during 2013 to help make the South Bay Etsy Meet & Makes a success!

We'll be taking a break for the month of January, since the First Friday art walk will be on holiday hiatus -- so here's saying Happy Holidays to everybody from the South Bay Meet & Make team! Hope to see you in 2014!

South Bay Etsy Meet & Make: Catrina Ornaments with Armani Mondragon

We had such a great time last week at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles! SF Etsy member Armani Mondragon of Retablos led the Etsy Meet & Make Fiber Salon, teaching us how to make adorable Catrina Ornaments.
Liz of Ionyka and Armani of Retablos setting out materials for the workshop.

SF Etsy volunteers Liz of Ionyka and Vicki of Oh Abby Day get a chance to make their own Catrinas.
The workshop was well attended, and the participants really enjoyed making their felt creations. As always, Armani was an inspiring and encouraging workshop leader!

It's been fun to see some of the same folks making it a tradition to join us on the first Friday of the month for the South Bay Meet and Make. We are definitely seeing familiar faces! And this time around, people were pretty independent and didn't need a whole lot of help with their own work, so the volunteers were able to have a little crafty fun of their own!

Thanks again to the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles for hosting another great Etsy Meet & Make event!

South Bay Etsy Meet & Make Fiber Salon: Felted Note Cards with Armani

Yet another successful Etsy Meet & Make at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles! On Friday, there was a crowd of crafty folks who came out to the Fiber Salon to make Felted Note Cards with SF Etsy's own Armani Mondragón of Retablos.
Two charming sample note cards by Armani -- the one in yellow was inspired by the current exhibit of New York Beauty Quilts at the museum.
As with the other Fiber Salon events, all the materials were provided and the event was free! Check out the inspirational array of materials for participants to select from and use in their own cards. Felt, embroidery floss, beautiful papers...

Sparkly papers! Yay!
Volunteers Rossella and workshop leader Armani organize the materials while participants make their selections. Spotted there on the end: SF Etsy member Liz of Ionyka! She blogged about her beautiful cards here.

A variety of folks, young and old, male and female, came by to participate in the workshop. Several times during the evening, a hush fell over the room as everybody focused intently on their creative process. It was a magical moment, so many folks collected together to make something beautiful! I especially liked this card by Cindy:

Here's the one that I made -- of course it has purple in it!

Felted note card by yours truly. And some of Armani's fabulous fiber art from Retablos in the background!
Armani was an inspirational workshop leader, full of encouragement and smiles for everyone.  Here she is, making sure everything is in order!

Many thanks to Armani and to SF Etsy volunteer Rossella of Ross Lab for all their help in putting on another successful event in the Meet & Make series!

Stay tuned for details about the September South Bay Etsy Meet & Make, which will once again be part of the South First Friday Art Walk -- a little bird told me that we'd be making a fun and eco-friendly back-to-school craft!

We Met & We Made at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles

Last night, more than 100 crafty folks got together at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles for a fascinating workshop led by SF Etsy team co-captain Even Howard. Even taught us a little textile history and showed us how to use embroidery floss to make weavings and bows inspired by Victorian Hairwork.
Even Howard of Nadene reviews workshop instructions
Part of the SoFA First Friday Art Walk, the evening was the kick-off event for the South Bay Etsy Meet & Make program. The SF Etsy team is proud to be working with the museum to support more crafty events in the South Bay -- stay tuned for more exciting announcements about upcoming events! The event was very well organized, and all supplies were included. I love this workshop format!

Even had two options for folks to explore: an infinity bow and a floss weaving.
Sample projects inspired by Victorian Hairwork by Even Howard of Nadene
I really enjoyed seeing the various interpretations to the workshop guidelines. This infinity bow card was gorgeous!
The room was packed with eager participants -- we kept having to add more and more tables as more and more people wanted to be part of the crafty action!
Museum director Christine looks on as folks dive into the project.

You could practically see the creativity in the air! (Or perhaps that was a side effect of the warm room -- we've been assured that the A/C will be all fixed by our event next month! Many thanks for everyone's patience regarding climate control.)

SF Etsy volunteer Kashmira helps some other SF Etsy members: Liz of ionyka chooses her colors while SF Etsy co-captain Katy looks on.

Our lovely team co-captains Even and Katy took a moment to smile for the camera!
Many thanks to the team volunteers who came out to help make the evening such a success!

A big thank you to Etsy for sponsoring this great event -- and many, many thanks to our wonderful hosts and all the folks at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles! We're so glad to be partnering with you. Already looking forward to the June Meet & Make which will be taught by the amazing Rebecca of OodleBaDoodle! More details on that coming soon!

We Met! We Made! When Can We Do It Again?

This past weekend, we had our first South Bay Meet & Make, and eight of us had a nice afternoon of crafting, chatting, and enjoying A Work of Heart Studio. A big thank you to Andrea, the owner of the studio, for letting us meet in her lovely, creative space!

From left to right: Pamela of Something Kicky, Eko of Eko Jewelry Design, Liz of ther.a.py, Sarit of Shakuf Design, Lori of Salt & Light, Rachel of Mixsome, Cyndee of Earthborn Gourds, and Jen of Mama's Magic Studio.

Most of us were jewelry makers of one kind or another, and it was fun to talk about suppliers, techniques, and other tips. One of the best things about getting together with other handcraft artists is sharing ways to make work easier -- I loved Liz's portable workspace! Her mom had made it for her, including a measuring scale right on the work cloth. Brilliant!

Rachel's shop features her polymer clay creations, but on Sunday she brought her knitting. I'd almost brought mine, too! For me, there's something about having knitting needles in play that makes it easy for conversation to flow.

I was working on some yarn ball pendants, twisting them out of colored wire. Hopefully for a new consignment account -- I meet with the owner tomorrow! Wish me luck!

Cyndee brought a bunch of her gourds to work on some birdhouses. I'd be jealous of any bird who had such great digs! Here Pamela watches while Cyndee does her thing.

For more pics of the afternoon, check out our Facebook page!
Our hands were busy for most of the afternoon, and at the end of our session we were scheming ways to make another South Bay Meet & Make happen soon. Look for details at the Google group in the coming weeks!
And of course we'd love to continue the Meet & Make tradition with gatherings in San Francisco, Berkeley, or anywhere in the Bay Area. If you have an idea for a Meet & Make, let me know about it in the comments or shoot me a convo at my Etsy shop!

SF Etsy Meet & Make in San Jose -- January 30!

I'm getting so excited for our first SF Etsy Meet & Make of 2011! We will be meeting on January 30th from 2 to 5 pm at the wonderfully inspiring space of A Work of Heart Studio in San Jose.

Andrea, the owner of the studio, has generously opened her space to the SF Etsy team and guests of the team for FREE studio time during our Meet & Make! (Studio time is normally $7 an hour!)

Andrea says that during the Meet & Make, tools are all available for use with no added fees. Consumables such as paint, ink, glue, glitter, scraps of paper, etc. are also included. Full sheets of paper, canvas, fabric, ribbon by the yd, buttons, metal, glass, game pieces, etc all cost extra. (Just ask if you're not sure -- Andrea is super friendly!)

And just in case you missed my earlier post in which I practically jumped up and down with glee, simply delighted by all the great stuff available at A Work of Heart, you can go here to read about all the nifty tools, supplies, and resources.

This Meet & Make will be a casual gathering to work on UFOs (UnFinished Objects) and WIPs (Works in Progress), or just to spend a few hours exploring all the great stuff at A Work of Heart. So bring your UFOs, WIPs, a snack or drink to share, and join us for an afternoon of crafting, chatting, and connecting with local creative folks!

All we ask is that you RSVP here at our Facebook event page so we know how many people to plan for.

Hope to see you soon at A Work of Heart Studio, "Where Everyone is an Artist." On January 30th it is going to be packed with creative energy!

South Bay Meet & Make -- Coming in January!

Hey there, South Bay SF Etsy folks! (And anybody willing to drive!) We are planning a Meet & Make for January, and this is your chance to help us choose the date. We will meet at the lovely Work of Heart Studio in Willow Glen (which I posted about here) sometime in January.

Right now the plan is to either have a specific tutorial to theme the evening (if somebody steps forward to teach something) or simply get together for a UFO night (working together on Un Finished Objects).

Want to teach something? Let me know! Want to give input on which dates work for you? Please take the poll on the sidebar to the left. Poll closes in a week, so vote now!

Looking forward to getting together in the New Year!
