Captain's Log: Interview with Caitlin Bacher of Little Farm Media

Happy Monday!

It's Valentine's week! A sweet holiday for handmade items! This week, I am continuing our series of interviews with creative business supporters. If you missed the first two: Popupsters & The Academy of Handmade, grab your coffee, take some time and read them, these are good people to know :)

As small business owners, we can't thrive (or survive) without some support. Often times, we are working alone, trying to figure out each step of business by doing research or asking another small business owner questions or joining a business group (like SFEtsy!) but sometimes, we need just a little bit more.

Personally, when I hear the words "social media" I get a little overwhelmed and sometimes annoyed (I don't want to be that person posting all the time). After spending my days making things, filling orders, packing, shipping, photographing and writing descriptions, I can tell you the last thing on my list is getting online and chatting with people over "social media." However, I know it's an important part of marketing my business.

Enter: Social Media Guru, Caitlin Bacher. Together, Caitlin and I lead the SF Chapter of The Academy of Handmade. We sat down to chat about her business, Little Farm Media and how she is helping creative entrepreneurs move past that "overwhelming" feeling attached to social media and help them use online social tools to drive traffic to their online stores.

Enjoy this interview and feel free to reach out to Caitlin for help with your own social media questions.

1. Can you tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Caitlin Bacher and I run the show at Little Farm Media. I offer social media consultations for creative entrepreneurs and blog a ton. Plus, I co-lead the San Francisco chapter of Academy of Handmade. When I’m not working it at work, I can be found wearing sweat pants, playing Scrabble with my husband, or chasing after my (ahem) spirited three year old.

2. How did you first get involved in with makers and the handmade community?

I noticed that there wasn’t any social media advice specifically created for the handmade + maker biz community. There are plenty of vague articles telling you to "Be Authentic" and "Share Your Story". What does that even mean? People need concrete examples, not regurgitated quotes.

3. What do you find most exciting about working with makers, entrepreneurs, and artisans?

I have an instant connection with anyone who is out there trying to do what they love and make money doing it. I understand how hard it can be to try and figure everything out on your own. Communities like SF Etsy and Academy of Handmade are absolutely critical for your success.

4. What do you find most challenging about working with makers, entrepreneurs, and artisans?

Many artsy people feel very awkward about promoting themselves. Coming off too sales-y is their number one concern. I really respect that. The best part of my job is helping them find a way they can promote their work with confidence and ease.

5.  How did you learn about SFEtsy?

I don’t remember exactly how, but I think the first place I connected with SF Etsy was on Twitter. SF Etsy does an amazeballs job of creating community on ALL their social media platforms (editor's note: thanks to Lisa Spinella!) . They are so inclusive and generous, which makes everyone feel welcome.

6. What is one of your primary goals for your business in 2015?

I want to be able to provide more services at affordable rates. Figuring out a way to do this in a way that provides real value to my clients has been no easy task. I think I’ve nailed it with my One-On-One Brainstorming Session. It’s a super affordable way to get social media advice that is personalized for your biz. You won’t find anything else like it.

7. What’s the one online tool you’ve discovered that can help makers propel their business?

Here’s the thing. I know people that run a successful biz using Instagram, Facebook, or whatever. That doesn’t mean that if you join Instagram or create a Business Facebook page you will become a millionaire. People find success on whatever platform they are using because they do their research. Each platform requires a different strategy. It’s not what you use, it’s how you use it.

8. Do you have any words of wisdom to help makers sell more in person at popup events?

Do not rely exclusively on the organizers to promote your event. You are the boss of your biz and it’s your job to bring in people who will buy your stuff. Period. Tease your social media audience with what you’re doing to get ready for the show and build some excitement. Give them a reason to come.

P.S. Join Little Farm Media for a Pinterest Marketing Workshop on February 21 in Emeryville that will give you actionable advice you can use immediately. The cost of your ticket will pay for donuts, the space rental, and a latte for myself. RSVP right here because space is super limited. Bring your laptop.

Inpsired by Handmade: What I find "Pinteresting"

We have over 44 boards - and growing!

CHECK OUT THE SF ETSY PINTEREST BOARDS!

I know I'm not the only one that finds Pinterest probably the most addictive thing since sliced bread... that is, if you love bread as much as I do.

OK... so maybe not all of your are Pinners... but did you know that Pinterest brings the most unique visitors to sites than any other?...and for this alone - climb aboard the Pinterest Train with me. (and feel free to ask me if you need an invite to start an account)

Some General Rules of Thumb for Success:

  • Don't over-pin. Followers will unfollow if you've hidden all their followers behind your steady stream of Pin It Addiction
  • New Pins should be pinned directly from the original website where the image/content was found so that the person gets the credit they deserve.
  • Remember your audience - you can hide boards that are just for your own personal inspiration...if you want your content to be relivant to your followers, keep your visible content something they will find interesting... like DIY projects, recipes and inspirational quotes if most of your followers are Etsy fans.
  • Pin Images that are clear and have good resolution.
  • Curate your boards - make them specific and you'll get more followers - such as a color, cohesive theme, or type items (like favorite shoes, recipes or haunted mansions)

I found an article about Pinterest & Small Businesses that really shows the benefit of it for smaller businesses just starting out. About.com said: "Small businesses have started to see the value in Pinterest. Take for example graphic artists, photographers, interior designers and fashion designers, they are able to create storyboards showcasing their work. They have the freedom to display their work using their creativity, personal style and personality creating fantastic portfolios that can be seen and shared by other Pinterest users. This allows consumers to check out their work, prior to contacting them"

Our Leader in charge of social media - Lisa of TickleandSmash - has been SUPER busy building Pinterest Boards centered around our SF Etsy team! You know you'll get beautiful imagery straight from Etsy with our ever-changing boards. Plus! You'll be supporting SF Etsy Team Members with every RePin.

CHECK OUT THE SF ETSY PINTEREST BOARDS!

Lisa asked me to Guest Pin - YAY!
So I got to fill up a board with SF Etsy Peeps that I found amazing and inspiring. I kept in mind the rules of thumb above.

HERE'S WHAT I FOUND "PINTERESTING"! (ALL SF ETSY TEAM MEMBERS, TOO!)
--> clicky here

It was the First Pin that got me inspired!
Welp, it all started with Helen Pappas - my friend through Astra Brinkmann.
I saw a photo of her modeling an adorable yarn hat by FoxTree and I just had to pin it to my guest board because I was excited to see someone I knew who isn't part of SF Etsy (she does however make some rad backpacks that should be on Etsy)

From there, I Just kept my pallette cohesive....I stuck to picking muted colors for the most part, blended with peaches, pinks and oranges. I also kept my theme by sticking to SF Etsy Sellers only... since that way, members can re-pin from my board knowing they are supporting their local team members.

What I love about building a Pinterest board really brings my personality forward. Can you tell I pretty much look like my Pinterest board every day? OK... maybe I don't really... but I sure feel like I do...or I have dreams that I do.

Share links to your Pinterest boards below. I'd love to see what you find Pinteresting!

Tech Tools: Pinterest

Pinterest (Pin + Interest) has been gaining attention lately and it's a wonderful tool.  A recent partnership with Etsy, millions in venture funding, and the fact that they are hiring like mad means you will probably be seeing a lot more of Pinterest and more ways to use it!

Pinterest profile page showing my latest "pins"
What does it do?
If you like to record inspiration, explore design (including typography), or have interest in the worlds of fashion design, home decor, and kitchen delights, you'll find a community of like minds immediately.

The "Pin it" button can be found
in the lower right of any Etsy listing.
Pinterest can be more (or less!) than all that though.  It's simply an online bulletin board, where you can create your own public boards and sift through the collections of others. Etsy recently added a "pin it" button on each item listing, so it's easier than ever to share your own items, create collections and mood boards, and save ideas for gifting.

How do I start?
Pinterest is easiest to use if you are accustomed to other services that add a button to your browser searchbar, like Amazon.com's wish list button.  If that makes no sense, you can still get started, just don't forget that you will be able to add your own Pins from any site once you get the hang of the browser bar.

First thing: sign up!  Etsy has created an invite link.  I chose to connect my account with Facebook so I don't have to remember new passwords.

Pinning from a browser window~
Next: go ahead and add the "Pin it" button to your browser. Use this link.  Now, whenever you see an image you like, you can click the "Pin it" button (link) on your browser and add the image to one of your boards.  Pinterest walks you through it via pop-up windows.
Explore!  That's what Pinterest is all about, check out the categories up top, look for your friends by linking with Facebook, and start adding original content by pinning from sites outside of Pinterst itself.  It can be easiest to pin from other users, but don't forget that's not all you can do!

Check out our collaborative board.  Please post your username and a link to your profile in the comments below if you would like to follow and be followed by fellow SF Etsians.

Extra Credit:

  • You can add your own "Pin it" and "Follow" to your personal site or blog buttons if you host your own website.
  • There are mobile versions, you can take photos from your Ipad or Iphone and pin them.
  • Pinterest etiquette~ check out some emerging suggestions from other users.

Please do share your experience and questions in the comments below!
